Living a healthy lifestyle is something that Vancouver physician, Dr. Ali Ghahary, strongly promotes.
To live a healthy lifestyle means that you are taking care of your entire mind and body. For example, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, and keeping a healthy diet by limiting carbohydrates and increasing your intake of fruits, vegetables and water. With obesity rates on the rise in Canada, many individuals are now trying to turn to making healthier choices when it comes to grocery shopping. Organic food, for example, has become a feature at most supermarkets.
“Organic” is a term that refers to how farmers process their agricultural products such as meat, grains, fruits, vegetables and dairy. For products to be considered organic by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, specific requirements must be met. For example, crops must be grown with natural fertilizers such as manure and compost materials rather than the use of “conventional” methods such as pesticides and synthetic fertilizers.
Studies have suggested that organic foods contain higher levels of nutrients such as vitamins C and E, as well as higher levels of antioxidants, iron, magnesium, phosphorus and omega-3 fatty acids. Each of these nutrients have different jobs, including decreasing the risk of developing infections as well as providing your body with more energy and allowing it to better function. Organic foods also have no nasty additives, which can contribute to major health problems such as migraines and heart disease. They also taste better!
